Electric Vehicles

EV Charging in the Hill Country

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular due to a number of advantages for consumers, including convenience, cost savings, and environmental benefits. On average, it costs about half as much to drive an EV, compared to a similar vehicle that runs on gasoline. EVs also produce zero direct emissions, which improves air quality, enhances public health, and reduces environmental impact.

KPUB added the first electric vehicle charging station in the Hill Country region, which is located inside the Kerrville Downtown Parking Garage. KPUB has expanded six more of them within our community, including the fast charge level 3 station recently installed in the parking lot of the Kerrville Convention & Visitors’ Bureau (CVB).

As more electric vehicles come onto the market, KPUB’s staff is actively planning how to incorporate customers’ charging needs into our community’s electricity infrastructure.

Our staff continues to look at prospective community spaces for potential charging stations to add for the convenience of the public.

Everyday Advantages of EVs

Lower fuel cost

Charging at home in Texas is typically comparable to paying around $1.10 per gallon equivalent, often below gasoline prices. Actual cost varies by rate and charging habits.

Less maintenance

EVs have fewer moving parts and don’t need oil changes, which can reduce routine maintenance over time.

Convenience

Wake up to a full battery after overnight charging, or use KPUB community stations while you shop, work, or explore local attractions.

Home Charging Support

Most EV drivers do the majority of charging at home. KPUB can help you plan a safe installation and understand any panel upgrades you might need.

  • Guidance on charger options (Level 1 vs. Level 2)
  • Best practices for off‑peak charging
  • Coordination with licensed electricians

Incentives & Resources

Federal clean vehicle credit

Some new EV models may qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500, subject to income, vehicle, and assembly requirements. Click here for more information from the DOE on this topic.

Texas programs

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) periodically offers rebates that may apply to vehicles or charging equipment.
