When winter temperatures drop, it’s common to see an increase in electricity use across homes and businesses. Heating systems, water heaters, and everyday appliances must work harder to keep indoor spaces comfortable during extreme cold.
Even if you haven’t changed your thermostat settings, colder outdoor temperatures can cause your heating system to run more often. Recent and upcoming cold snaps may increase energy use, and with winter not yet over, additional cold spells could continue to impact your KPUB electric bill.
Why Your Energy Use Rises During Cold Weather
Heating systems run longer
Your HVAC system cycles on more frequently to maintain a warm indoor temperature, increasing electricity usage.
Water heaters work overtime
Colder incoming water means your water heater uses more energy to reach your desired temperature.
Space heaters add up quickly
Portable space heaters can provide extra warmth, but continuous use can significantly increase electricity consumption.
Appliances work harder
Refrigerators and heat pumps use additional energy during extreme cold, especially during defrost cycles.

Is My Higher Bill Caused by a Rate Increase?
No, KPUB has not had a recent rate increase. KPUB customers continue to benefit from some of the lowest electric rates in the State of Texas. Learn more about our rates here.
Your total bill is influenced by several factors, but heating and cooling typically account for about half of winter energy costs—largely depending on how warm you prefer to keep your home or office.
Tips to Reduce Winter Energy Costs
Set your thermostat to 68° while home and 58° when away
Replace or clean HVAC filters monthly to keep your system running efficiently.
Set your water heater to 120° and limit hot water use.
Seal air leaks around doors, windows, and vents to keep warm air inside.
