What to do if your vehicle hits a utility pole

If your vehicle hits a utility pole, the accident site could be energized from downed wires. You should call 9-1-1 and KPUB at 830-257-3050, tell those that approach your car to stay away, and only exit the vehicle if it is on fire.

  • If you must exit the vehicle, it needs to be done safely. Jump out of the vehicle with your arms crossed landing on BOTH feet. Do not touch the car when you jump. Next, hop or shuffle away from the vehicle, and never touch the ground and the vehicle at the same time or two different areas on the ground to avoid shock. Hop or shuffle away until you are at least 35 feet from the vehicle and any downed power lines.
  • If someone helps at the site of a hit utility pole, tell them to stay at least 35 feet away because they are in danger, as well. Shout to them that you have called 9-1-1 and that help is on the way.

If you see someone who has crashed into a utility pole, stay in your vehicle at least 35 feet away and call 9-1-1. Shout at the victim to stay in their car especially if they try to exit.
