With the Fourth of July just around the corner, friends and family are preparing for food, fun, and, of course, fireworks. Fireworks can be fun for everyone of all ages, but also extremely dangerous when they are not used correctly or with proper measures. In order to keep yourself and your family and friends safe, it is crucial to handle fireworks safely and carefully.

  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hand
  • Never point or use fireworks near people, houses, and other flammable objects
  • Only light one firework at a time
  • Maintain a safe distance after ignition
  • Young children should never handle fireworks
  • After ignition, do not hold fireworks
  • Only purchase legal fireworks from a licensed seller
  • Read all directions before use
  • Check to make sure shooting off fireworks is legal in your area
  • Do not consume drugs or alcohol while handling fireworks
  • Keep pets inside or at a safe distance
  • Fireworks should only be used in large outdoor areas away from flammables
  • Wear protective eyewear and clothing
  • Soak leftover debris in water overnight to ensure it will not ignite in the future
  • Do not attempt to make your own fireworks by dismantling fireworks
  • Do not light fireworks in glass or metal containers
  • Do not use fireworks near powerlines
  • Have water on hand in case of a fire
