New Year’s resolutions can be hard to keep – but they don’t have to be. Resolve to save energy in 2023, and use less energy all year long! It’s good for the environment and good for your pocketbook.

These helpful tips from your friends here at KPUB will get you started with a fresh start for 2023!

Lower your thermostat by just 1 degree. You’ll hardly notice the change and it can reduce your heating bill by up to 3%. Save even more by lowering your thermostat 2 degrees during the day and 5 to 10 degrees at bedtime, if health conditions permit.

Use a smart/programmable thermostat. Automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR® estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. KPUB also offers rebates that offset the cost of the smart thermostat, which helps make it even easier to save energy!

Seal up your home for savings. Weatherize your home by sealing gap/air leaks along vents, windows and doors. Small investments with caulking and weatherstrips can pay off big.

Make sure your dishwasher and washer/dryer are being used appropriately for energy usage. Since these appliances use both electricity and water, they can drive up costs. Waiting until they are fully loaded is a great way to ensure they are not being run too often. But not too full! If your dryer is too full, it will take longer for clothes to dry. Loads that are too small can also use more energy than needed. So, use the right-sized loads to dry clothes and save energy.
