April 30, 2018 – Kerrville Public Utility Board (KPUB) is the proud recipient of two distinctive awards this year. The utility, which serves the community of Kerrville, Texas and outlying areas, has received the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2017, as well as the designation of Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® for providing reliable and safe electric service.
The Award of Excellence in our group was open to utilities with 110,000 to 250,000 worker-hours of annual worker exposure. This year, more than 300 utilities entered to receive the Safety Award, which is the highest number of entrants in the history of the program. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records during 2017. The incidence rate, used to judge entries, is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries, or illnesses, and the number of worker-hours during 2017, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Duane Richardson, Chair of the Association’s Safety Committee announced the award to KPUB during the Association’s Annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference. “Electric utilities value safety above all else,” said Richardson. “The utilities receiving this award have demonstrated exceptional dedication to a culture of safety.”
“KPUB is proud of its safety record,” said Tammye Riley, Manager of HR, Safety & Training of Kerrville Pubic Utility Board (KPUB). “This award is a testament to the hard work that goes into ensuring that our team members go home safe to their families every day.”
The RP3 designation, which is held for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. KPUB joins more than 240 public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation.
“RP3 designation is a great way for KPUB to receive recognition for all the hard work our employees contribute to making this community-serving utility a success. Through participation in the program and learning best practices from our peers, we will be able to continue to improve the reliable, costeffective service we deliver safely so we may continue to exceed our customers’ expectations,” stated Tommy Nylec, Chief Engineer.
“This is a great honor,” said Mike Wittler, General Manager and CEO of Kerrville Public Utility Board. “All the credit for these achievements belong to the employees working on the front lines. They take a lot of pride in the work we do to power our community. I am very happy that our employees are getting the recognition they deserve for their initiative and hard work.”
